Brocade and Black

printed jeans | houseofjeffers.com

I can't make my mind up whether or not owning so many black tops is a good thing. Sure, black goes with everything, but I'm starting to thinking I'm falling into a comfort zone with it... Then again, when you're wearing printed brocade jeans in black and white, I think it's acceptable.

I honestly don't know where September went. I feel like September was a very confusing yet clarifying month for me in a lot of ways. Lately, I've been feeling like the path my life is on wasn't what I planned, and sometimes, it can get to me. But, I'm trying my best to grab hold of the reigns and hopefully, steer myself to the place I want to be. With a new season here, it's almost like getting a mini do-over four times a year.

Don't let me down, Fall!

Proceed With Caution - 3 Ways To Be A Smart Shopper

As a fashion blogger, you've probably fallen into the trap of shopping due to influence of others and what you see in magazines else. I've done this. Heck, I did this last night on my way home from work.

Perhaps you've recently justified your latest purchase with...
"It's for my blog."
or
"I have an event to go to. I needed it."
Shopping under the influence is a dangerous game as it'll catch up with your finances eventually.

You can still be on-trend and make smart shopping decisions if you avoid these three factors before handing over your credit card.

1. Magazines: Read with caution
Flipping through fashion magazines is how many of us relax and keep up with trends... And where the thought to buy something begins.

Put things in perspective especially when it comes to falling in love with things you see in magazines. Of course that red handbag looks amazing - that's because it's paired with other really amazing (and probably expensive) items.

If you don't have other things in your closet to complete the look, it's not worth it to drop a ridiculous amount of money on something you'll have to buy other pieces to make it look good with.

2.  Need versus Want
My biggest weakness without a doubt. I tend to buy things because I want them, not because I need them. It's gotten me into a lot of trouble in the sense that I own similar pieces with slight variation.

The concept to beat this is simple: If you don't really need it, put it back and leave the store. Sit on it for a couple of days, and if you find yourself not thinking about that dress you wanted, you probably didn't need it to begin with.

3. Get creative with outfits
I don't know who came up with the idea that you can only wear something on your blog once.
Probably a rich person...

Those of us who live in reality (that's you) can't afford to spend money on things you'll wear for 20 minutes in your pictures, or to an event, one time.

Recycle those duds, and show your audience how else to style your favorite red jeans. Show the value in reworking your clothes with other pieces and accessories in your closet. It's fun, and it definitely gives you more bang for your buck.

How do you curb your spending habits when it comes to shopping?

Tartan Plaid Trend

nyc fashion blogs | houseofjeffers

Plaid has always been a pattern that reminds me of the 90s...  I distinctly remember living in plaid button-up shirts in the 8th grade during my skater phase... before I had a clue what fashion really was.

Today, I still love plaid as it's starting to get a more feminine feel to it. Like this dress! The tartan plaid trend is one I'm all about - it's a little edgy, but can also be uber girly with the right accessories and of course, a little bit of leather.

Ever since the Met Gala celebrated punk, plaid is finally getting it's day. Oi!

Weekend Wears: City Stripes

nyc fashion bloggers | house of jeffers.com

Although I've lived in New Jersey my entire life, I've only visited certain parts of New York in the past four years due to my husband's job. On Sunday, Mike, Harley and I woke up way too early and headed to Randall's Island for a day of soccer, and the potential to go shopping in the city afterwards. With the weather being on the cooler side, I finally broke out this silk trimmed striped top I purchased at Marshalls!

And yes, Harley is wearing an England soccer jersey.

Us New Jerseyians absolutely take for granted how close we live to NYC. This was my first trip out to Randall's Island, and I have to say it's been a long time coming. I had no idea it was that big, and honestly, that pretty. During Mike's games, I explored the park with Harley and enjoyed breezy views of the East River.

In my younger days, I never really had someone to explore the city with, and going to New York was viewed more like a hassle to get to. But being married to Brit means being with someone who wants to see various parts of the U.S. - can't complain.

Conquering the 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target Collection

3.1 phillip lim for target women's collection | houseofjeffers.com

I think the smile on my face sums up how I feel about my 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target experience last Sunday. They say the early bird gets the worm, and in this case, that means I managed to get the Mini Satchel I wanted... and then some!

I've read about some other shoppers' experiences waiting in line for one of Target's most anticipated designer collaborations. Long lines, people pushing and shoving to get a bag... I experienced none of that. In fact, I managed to make friends with some of the other women who were nuts enough to sit in the Target parking lot at 7:30 in the morning.

A funny story though about my experience:

7:45 a.m.: I warn the women around me: "We should all act like ladies. We don't need to trample each other to get what we want... But if one of ya'll starts running, my ass will be right behind you."
8:00 a.m.: Target lets shoppers in.
8:10 a.m.:  I've managed to pick up the animal print skirt, a navy/green pullover sweater, and the matching animal print sweater. One girl gave me the Boom Print Scarf since she didn't want it.
8:12 a.m.: I spot the bags - or should I say, bag

My local Target store only had clothes out on the floor. None of the women's bags.
Eventually, the store found the bags... and the only way they felt was fair to let us have at em was in the order we lined up waiting outside.

That meant homegirl was No. 4 - and I got the Mini Satchel. God I love the honor system...

As for the tuxedo shirt that I'm rocking as a blazer, it wasn't at my store in the morning.
On a whim, I decided to go back at 2 p.m., and low and behold, there it was!

I came. I saw. I conquered 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target.

My Wardrobe Vocabulary

modcloth coupons | houseofjeffers.com

You know when you buy something that you end up loving so much, that you hold off wearing it... waiting for the perfect occasion? That would be this dress I bought from Modcloth.com about three months ago.

Orange is not a color in my wardrobe vocabulary, but paired with the pink stripes, I didn't give it a second thought. Yes, "love" is indeed the right word to describe it. This outfit is one of my all-time favorites I've worn on House Of Jeffers... it just feels like me.

My photographer friend, Fernanda, who I worked with at Barneys New York, and I had planned to do a shoot together... and immediately, I knew this dress would be perfect!

I'm feeling very Alice in Wonderland in these photos, and honestly, I think she made me look more glamorous than I normally do in some of my photos - and I'm not complaining!

Event Recap: RewardStyle Party at NYFW

nyfw parties 2013 | houseofjeffers.com

In the excitement of all the NYFW events, I almost forgot to post these photos from the RewardStyle party at the Empire Hotel. I had such a great time hanging with the fashionably chic Liz of Dear Andi and talented jewelry designer Emily Kammeyer of E.Kammeyer Accessories! Check out their sites!

Here's some quick snaps of the event!

I snapped this photo for the shoes, but the fact that this girl has horses on her pants
make it all the more awesome!

And speaking of sick shoes, Emily's Alexander McQueen pumps are so damn legit!

On Day 4 of New York Fashion Week, I hopped on a train from New Jersey to get my dose of Lincoln Center and all that NYFW has to offer. And of course you know I had to wear something striped... and something leather!

While I didn't attend any shows, I had plans to attend the RewardStyle party at the Empire Hotel in the afternoon, and caught up with the adorably sweet ladies of Sorrelli Jewelry. In between, I channeled my inner Bill Cunningham for some NYFW street style photos.

One of the highlights of the day was being photographed and interviewed about my bangs  (I'm not kidding) by Candice Lake for a Tresemme feature! She is so lovely, and I have a new found respect for her.

All of the eccentricity I love about fashion was in full force at Lincoln Center. Here are some of my favorite looks.

My Blue Heaven

olivia and joy handbags | houseofjeffers.com

I must admit: I'm getting excited that Fall means it's pants season again. Although admittedly, Fall isn't my favorite season, I'm starting to change my mind since I've purchased a number of printed pants and updated my jeans.

This outfit is very basic, but out of all the the accessories I'm wearing, the tiny Maid Marian braid is my my favorite. It's my way of giving my straight hair an update on the days when I'm feeling a little too plain.

This Sunday, I'll be venturing into the city for New York Fashion Week to take in the excitement, catch up with friends and hopefully, make new ones! Follow me @HouseOf Jeffers on Twitter to keep up with my activities - and if you see me or want to say hi, send me a tweet!
