Five essential items every fashion blogger should have

If you're gunna run a fashion blog and show off your looks, I think there's a couple of wardrobe staples every gal should have. These items aren't just things that I happen to favor - okay, maybe a little. Check out my top five items fashion bloggers should have stocked in their closets.

1. A blazer

Even if you're a lady that loves skirts and dresses, a blazer is versatile enough to go with leggings, shorts and of course, jeans.

I happen to have three - basic black, a beige one and a pink single-breasted blazer with black lapels which is for a dressier look. While it's considered a men's sportswear piece, blazers have come a long way for women as they're made in a variety of shapes with detailing that measures up to a men's equivalent. 

2. Tights

I'm talking good quality tights that are warm enough to rock in the winter, yet light enough to pair with summer looks. And they can be paired with everything - shorts, skirts, dresses. Investing in a couple of good pairs in a variety of colors will pay off in the end - especially during the spring to summer transition. I recommend We Love Colors - it's an amazing site where you can find pretty much any color imaginable.

3. Jeans

Ah, the underdog of fashion blogging - although eatsleepdenim is doing wonders for jeans. Let's face it - the weather doesn't always cooperate, ladies. I know you want to look like a doll and all standing outside for your pics, but I'm not trying to get sick because I didn't do what my mother told me to do - cover my legs when it's cold out.

If you're going to spend the most money on a wardrobe stable, you might as well put it in your pants... I mean, into a denim investment. For me, a pair of perfect fitting jeans is the make or break of an outfit that looks put-together or messy. Find whatever style fits you best and stock up.

4. A Handbag

Whether your favorite is Marc by Marc Jacobs (cough cough) or Miu Miu, buying a well-made bag is definitely a long term investment. Depending on the style, your bag of choice will most likely go with anything in your closet, - and unless your rough on it, will be with your for years to come. 5. A repeat offender

This is a piece that you love, and that readers identify with being "your style". Whatever it is, I say show it off... over and over again. I think it's great when a blogger takes pride in something that they love and can incorporate it into multiple looks. It's practical and realistic - not all of us have thousands laying around and can shop with carelessness. For me, it's vests... and Harley.

Natured inspired looks for less

As much as I am an admirer of high-end fashion, my wallet won't let me buy everything I want. This is where thriftiness comes in handy. Many a women pride themselves on bargain shopping, most of which can be done online if you know where to look. I won't call finding a less-expensive alternative a knock-off... but just a happy medium between finding a piece you like, inspired by your favorite designers, for less money.

While my secret shopping place is probably no secret to many, Etsy.com is the spot for unique jewelry, accessories and clothing - and they support the hand-made movement.

Gearing up for spring, I'm turning toward earthy, nature and Native American-esque pieces that don't break the bank. These four make the cut - coming in at under $60 or less!

1. Asymmetrical Snowflake Stone Bullet and Pyrite Necklace by GATHERJEWELRY - This necklace, for $58, combines metal with a natural white howlite stone. Pamela Love revealed her new collection during New York Fashion Week, filled with raw and rough crystals against polished metals (http://www.refinery29.com/pamela-loves-spring-jewelry-collection-slays-us#), and I think this piece is very comparable in price and look. Also, I love how a bullet shell can make a stone look chic. 


2. Octopussy Octopus Lace Earrings by thissilk - Lightweight lace and chandelier earrings all in one - so versatile! And they only cost $25!


3. Zebra Print Racerback Tank by PrettyRaccoon - I'm a fan of anything with animals chillin' on cotton jersey for $30. Skinny jeans, I'd like you to meet zebra racerback tank. This shop houses a plethora of animal friendly printed tees!


4. Leggings with Black Birds by Malu7 - These $48 tights reek of spring.

Although it is a highly commercialized holiday, I have a soft spot for Valentine's Day.
And this little dude....

I also dig the idea of giving someone cheesy gifts to show your love. Plus, it's an excuse to buy another outfit.

And while yes, those activities can be done any day, I think there's something to be said of holding the tradition of spending quality, facetime with your main squeeze - and I'm not referring to the app. With all the social media around us, I'm all about being with the one you love... or lust (depending on your situation).

Here's my three things about VD that don't sting:

1. Free dinner or not having to cook. If you're a lady, score. Dudes get a raw deal with having to pay for dinner. But then again, women burned their bras in liberation... However, on this day, the ladies get to rely on their femininity for a practically guaranteed meal. So yes, I'll have the lobster, please.

2. Buying embarrassing love paraphernalia at Spencer's with your friends and laughing your asses off. When else are you going to have an excuse for buying penis spaghetti...

3. If you're single, go out and use bad pick-up lines on people... and hopefully get away with it. Try that ish on any other day and see what happens.

No pick up lines for me... just a pair of obligatory heart tights (my most recent favorite purchase) to celebrate the day cupid became a commercialized pimp. Play on, playa.
